Bergen Point Southwest Outfall Replacement
Overview
OHLA USA, in a joint venture, carried out the Bergen Point Outfall Replacement contract, which called for constructing a tunnel 113 feet beneath the Great South Bay on Long Island. The tunnel houses an existing treated water outfall system that runs from the Bergen Point Water Treatment Plant and connects to the Barrier Island. The tunnel measures 2.6 miles and has a diameter of ten feet.
Scope of Work
The U.S. Hyperbaric Tunnel and Dive Medical Team provided onsite medical assessments and emergency medical care for Ballard Marine Construction's commercial divers and onsite compressed air workers. Data regarding the O'Neill Grading System (OGS) used for detecting middle ear barotrauma and Eustachian tube dysfunction, both symptomatic and asymptomatic, continues to be collected by the research division.
